WORK INFORMATION

In his diploma thesis titled "Suboptimal Secondary Structures of RNA" the focus was the development of an algorithm capable of calculating all acceptable suboptimal structures of RNA sequences within a given energy range above the minimal free energy. With this possibility the role of modified bases occuring in natural tRNA sequences of E. Coli was investigated. The algorithm was integrated to the "Vienna RNA Package" (Public Domain Software).

The aim of the project "NanoSynTest" is the development of an integrated machine capable of chemical synthesis and biological screening in silico. He was concerned with the development of evolutionary algorithms for the design of organic molecules and for steering the mechanical devices.

CURRENT PROJECTS
"Think networks" might be the right description of what is going on in this particular project. Since it was found that technical networks like the Internet or social networks exhibit subtle toplogies which are far from being random, biological networks were considered in terms of evolutionary set up network procedures. It turns out that regardless of the origin of biological networks (protein-protein interactions, genes or domains) all exhibit scale-free and partly small-world topology indicating the fact that biological networks are dominated by a small number of highly connected nodes. Interestingly, these nodes are crucial for the fast transport of information through the networks and turn out to be keyplayers in evolution. This type of networks were found in the sequential arrangement of domains in protein sequences, protein
and domain interaction networks (see PUBLICATIONS section).

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Born on June 11th in 1972 in Vienna, Austria and raised in Tyrol and Vorarlberg, Stefan graduated from High School in Vienna in 1990. After doing his mandatory military service in 1991 he started to study Biochemistry at the University of Vienna. After doing his diploma thesis with Walter Fontana and Peter Schuster at the Institute of Theoretical Biochemistry titled "Suboptimal Structures of RNA" he got his master degree in 1998. Afterwards he spent one year as a scientific colaborator at the Institute for Physical High Technology (IPHT) in Jena, Germany, where he worked on the project "Organic Synthesis and Screening in silico" in colaboration with MERCK in Darmstadt, Germany. Since April1999 he joins the bioinformaticsgroup at the EML as PhD Student and research assistant. A comprehensive biography can be found HERE!

PERSONAL INTERESTS

His leisure activities include playing basketball, sports in general, reading, enjoying music and movies and traveling. For a short period of time he was member of the students represenatives at the faculty of natural sciences at the University of Vienna. In Vienna he did some social activities with the scouts for almost 10 years. With his arrival in Germany he also started stock market speculations.
